Update on International Mail Destined for Brazil
Here’s an update on current and upcoming events that could impact postal services in Brazil:
Customs Clearance Delays:
- The work slowdown in customs continues. Clearances are only being done on Mondays and Fridays. There is hope that the strike will end in early September 2018.
International Mail Service Fee:
- As of AugustThe Brazilian Post is now charging R$15.00 (approx. US$3.75) for all international shipments regardless of whether or not taxes and duties were collected, effective as of August 27th.
- This mail service fee should not be confused with taxes or freight, as it refers to customs support activities carried out by the postal operator, such as the receipt of objects and inspection by X-ray, formalization of importation into the IRS system (when applicable).
Increase in State Taxes:
- The State of Minas Gerais (MG) has increased the state tax (ICMS) from 18% to 25%, which increases the already high duties and taxes to 113.33%.
