Is leaving the Universal Postal Union the right move for the United States?
The Trump administration’s recent decision to withdraw from the Universal Postal Union has implications that go far beyond terminal dues, according to Kate Muth with the International Mailers Advisory Group (IMAG). In a letter to the editor regarding The Washington Post’s article We’ve Got Mail, Ms. Muth notes “the United States would lose access to global processing systems that make international mail possible.” This could also slow exports due to potential operational changes and rate increases that may cause uncertainty for many businesses. In addition, it could spell problems for the United States’ goal of collecting advance electronic data on foreign shipments.
