Annual Report Highlights Strong Growth For Global Parcel Volumes
Last week, the Pitney Bowes’ annual Parcel Shipping Index Report was published and showed an impressive uptick in parcel volume. In 2018, the global parcel volume reached 87 billion up from 74 billion parcels in 2017. The 2018 numbers add up to 2,760 parcels shipped per second. The annual report also forecasts this figure will more than double within the next six years reaching around 200 billion parcels by 2025.
The Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index measures both volume and revenue in 13 major
markets, representing 3.7 billion people – U.S., Canada, Brazil, Germany, UK, France, Italy,
Norway, Sweden, China, Japan, Australia, and India.
The latest report reveals growth of 17% in 2018, in line with the growth projection range given in
previous reports. China has the strongest impact on the market with 51 billion parcels shipped in
2018. Excluding China, parcel volume increased by 6 %, from 34 billion in 2017 to 36 billion in
2018. Global parcel revenue remains strong, reaching $317 billion – up 13 % from the
Jason Dies, EVP and Vice President, Pitney Bowes, commented that e-commerce and retail continue to drive this growth, however, the growth rates for office sending industries like IT, healthcare, and manufacturing, are astounding as well. When asked about the factors that could impede future market growth rates, he was quick to point to various global economic uncertainties such as newly-introduced trade tariffs, as well as Brexit.
